Sexologists guide to rediscover sexual health

A sexologist happens to be a professional in improving sexual health.

They work with patients to resolve their problems related to sexuality.

These problems can be psychological or physical. Sexology is not recognized as being a profession in itself, it is a specific skill which is added to a first profession: general practitioner, gynecologist, psychiatrist, psychologist, and others.

Depending on their initial training, the practitioner therefore does not necessarily approach sexology in the same way.

Sexology is learned as part of continuing education, most often at university. This course generally lasts around 3 years.

The sexologist doctor performs a clinical examination, can prescribe additional tests in order to make a diagnosis, and prescribes medication. His service is reimbursed by social security.

The sexologist psychologist, he has a psychologist diploma, cannot prescribe medication and his service is not reimbursed by social security.

He follows and treats patients with sexual disorders of psychological and relational origin.

How does the interview take place?

The sexologist listens to his patient to talk about his sexuality and any problems he is facing.

He welcomes his patient, puts him at ease and leads him to formulate the reasons for his visit.

Then, he carries out an analysis to know the person’s history and background. He will try to evaluate the origin of the problem, look for possible physical causes, he will be able to explain to his patient how his body and his sexual organs work.

He can also address themes such as pleasure, sexual desire, relationships with others through sexuality, feelings of love, etc.

It is also an opportunity for the patient to talk about his suffering, his worries, his impact of his disorder in his sexual relationships. It might be good to go as a couple!

It is important that you can tell the sexologist if you have already met a doctor (if he is not one himself) and if he has already examined you to determine an organic cause linked to the problem.

What can he/she offer?

Depending on his/her area of expertise, he/she can offer individual or couple psychotherapy, body therapy, relaxation techniques, pharmacological treatment (medications), referral to surgical intervention, etc.

A sexologist can also be asked to provide advice and intervene in an educational process relating to emotional and sexual life.

He can host conferences, make podcasts, write articles on themes related to sexuality.

Where to find it?

Most sexologists being doctors or psychologists, they work in care structures (Sexual Health Center for example, link or privately.

Please note! Knowing that this title is not protected by law, any person can today call yourself a sexologist, it is important to remain vigilant before making your choice!

The price of consultations varies greatly from one practitioner to another. The consultation with a sexologist doctor is partly covered by Social Security (reimbursement of 70% of the conventional rate) provided that the sexologist is an approved doctor.
